How to Make the Most of a Very Small Space

More and more people are living in smaller and smaller houses to try to both save money and lessen their impact on the environment (and it sure makes housekeeping a lot easier!), and this has led to some small rooms serving big purposes. Whether you've turned a small room into a vanity or office or you have a naturally small bathroom or bedroom, there are things you can do to make the most of it.

Tip #1: Think UP. When you find ways to draw the eye up, the room looks naturally larger. The easiest way to do this is to go vertical: long shelves, wall art hung high on the wall, and darker colors on the bottom tapering out to lighter colors at the top.

Tip #2: Lighter Colors. Dark colors in a small room can make it feel more like a dungeon than a homey space, so make it a little more comfortable with lighter colors. Light greens and blues are a great option, but any color can be used effectively. Use dark colors for accents instead of making them wall or furniture colors.

Tip #3: Bring in the Light. In addition to the lighter colors, light itself can make a room feel bigger than it is. If you have a window in the room, dress it with sheer curtains; if not, give yourself the option of brighter or lower lights with a dimmer switch or a variety of lamps.

Tip #4: Maximize Storage. Use every space you can for storage, multitasking when necessary. A small chest can serve as both a seat and storage, shelves can be used both to draw the eye upward and to store anything, especially if you add a few small baskets or jars. Use the area under tables or desks for storage by adding a table skirt. Get creative!

Just because the room is small doesn't mean your style has to be!
